This course deals with using a systematic process to find and address the gaps between actual and current performance and conditions. As learners interact with their fellow participants in discussions in the Learning Exchange and work collaboratively in their small groups, they will synthesise models that can be used when conducting a needs assessment; begin to use strategies and instruments and even modify the way they are to be used to fit their needs. In my experience, my group and I came up with a novel idea to integrate a business logic into a SWOT Analysis and found it to be of great use in coming up with more precise and relevant information. Moreover, learners will debate on whether individual or human factors cause the major conflicts in organisations. These tasks will be done whilst simultaneously working on an individual case study and a group project. Moreover, learners will be exposed to a wide variety of strategies and tools such as organisational and environmental scans, business logics, cause and gap analysis, fishbone techniques and interview protocols to name a few. Due to the multitasking activities, the authentic exposure to strategies and tools as well as reporting and presenting results, the link between Needs Assessment being task and people-oriented will begin to formalise for learners. By the end of the course, learners who take full advantage of this learning experience will be able to address gaps using tools and strategies, use an appropriate model based on the goal of the needs assessment, conduct the different analyses and suggest a solution(s) giving an appropriate justification.
